An Incredible Story of Compassion

Last night, I was on the telephone speaking to a dear friend, its fair to say that  I was in a BMC mode (Bitch Moan Complain), luckily for me the  person at the other end was well prepared for my barrage of victimization stories and bemoaning. After I ceased my incessant whining, he shared something with me that immediately shifted my perspective and I literally felt my heart open up.  Here is the story, it was first originally used by the famous  Dr. Karl Menninger’s, it’s entitled,  The Human Mind: A group of fish are swimming around in a pond when they notice one fish lying on its side with its tail flapping, and they decide to get away as quickly as possible from the weird fish — never noticing that the reason for its behavior is that it has a hook in its mouth, and the fish was just doing the best it could.

When I heard this story it quickly occurred to me that we are all just doing the very best that we can.  I realized that the people that I had been blaming for the cause of my supposed grief where in fact simply just doing the best they could. The more I substituted this story with each of my so called victimizers I felt an enormous sense of empathy and compassion overwhelm me.

We are in fact all just doing the very best we can. And to love and just simply understand from a place of love and compassion, opens the doors of awakening toward human understanding that is for me so vitally important to co-existing on this planet.

The Lost Generation: Have You Seen This?

I am part of a lost generation
and I refuse to believe that
I can change the world
I realize this may be a shock but
“Happiness comes from within.”
is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy.”
So in 30 years I will tell my children
they are not the most important thing in my life
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
work
is more important than
family
I tell you this
Once upon a time
Families stayed together
but this will not be true in my era
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
30 years from now, I will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my divorce
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making
In the future
Environmental destruction will be the norm
No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about this earth
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.

And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it .

Read the message, then read it again in reverse.

Day 1: Life Lessons

Well today starts the journey of discovery into the lessons of life. I thought of no better place to begin than with the father of my good friend that had originally come up with the idea, for this inquiry.

Here´s basically the transcript from our call.

Profile

Name: M.B.
Country: USA
Age: 73
Occupation: 50 Years As  A Consultant  in Sales and Promotional Products

Btang:  So M.B. Thank you for your time. What type of advice or wisdom would you have for someone to avoid making mistakes in their lives? Or things that you have learned or things that you would like to pass on?

M.B. : First of all, I´m just going to talk randomly, because that´s just how I am, don´t trust everyone you meet in life.

With the internet and information there´s so much to learn about people. That before going into any venture with anybody make sure they´re checked out thoroughly. I learned this, of course, the hard way.

And some of the things I have learned is that the only real way to make a living, is have a strong work ethic. That means not getting up at 9 or 10 in the morning and quitting work at 5.  As I have had salesmen say to me, ¨I write $1 million a year. ¨ And I know for a fact, they don´t , but I said you can´t write a $1 million a year going to work from 9 to 5.  The only way to do that, is too work hard, 7 days a week. When you´re young. This person never wrote more than a $250,000 because in the afternoons he was playing basketball.

So you can´t fool anybody, but yourself in thinking that there´s just  gold on the street and that it´s coming to you. You have to aggressively work, early to late, because you only have so many years of your life to do that. And now that I´m 73 I´m not working and I could sleep late, and do whatever I want. But I miss the camaraderie of all the people in the business world.

Because it´s very motivating to you and to me to keep my mind going and all that. And that´s important for anybody as I have told my son all the time, you have to get not only motivated but you have to join organizations and business groups to keep you fully informed of what´s going in the world in your business field. To always be the top in that area.

And also have a very very clean, reputation. Squeaky clean. As nobody can say anything bad about me, per se, because I know in my heart I´ve worked hard, and always looked out for my sales people, and the company, and not always did I look out for myself, but you have to remember that your life comes first. Especially family life, and make sure that as you get older and have children and all that, you have to spend time with them but yet aggressively work and know that if you´re working hard, you´ll be successful.

There is no-o secret to making money per se. It´s only hard work. Unless you´re married to somebody that has lots of money. So I don´t know if that´s anything that you´re looking for? I sure couldn´t put it into words, but I just speak from the heart. To me, it´s just work, work, work, I don´t care , because I tease my son all the time, I say, you can tell me how great business is, but the bottom line is, are you working the hours, to really do the business? Because if you´re not, sooner or later it´s going to catch up with you.

In conclusion, it was a great conversation and as always very illuminating. In short, always do your vetting and don´t always trust at first glance, do your homework. Work hard, a good work ethic and reputation, because there are no free lunches, success comes to those that go after it. Keep abreast of what´s going on in your field of expertise, and sharpen the saw. And that it takes a lifetime to build a reputation so make constant deposits into your trust account, whereby those around you have the full faith and trust that you say what you do and do what you say. And the importance of family and relationships and connections. All very important Life Lessons, thank you M.B.

365 Days A Year – Life Lessons

A few weeks ago I was walking early in the morning in the local park near my house, in the small Spanish town of Aranjuez. As I ventured into an unknown path, I found myself looking upon what seemed to be an old stone structure directly at the end of the river. I asked a older Spanish gentleman passing by, what exactly was it that I was looking at? And he confirmed that it was indeed an old castle.

I then summoned up the courage and asked him, “Excuse me, I have  a question for you. What advice would you have for a young person such as myself, to avoid making mistakes in the future?” And I just shut my mouth and waited. He paused for a brief moment and then said, “To be honest, to live a life of dignity and honor. You must be a good worker, work hard in whatever you do. Enjoy your work.  Be good, be a good person with honor. ” Then he paused one more time to reflect for a brief second and proceeded to say, “To have tranquility inside. Calmness inside.”

Although the conversation took no more than a minute, it felt like a lifetime in the presence of an elderly wise man. I could see that he too felt somewhat more alive with a perk in his step, after sharing a bit of his own personal wisdom. We parted ways as he embraced my hand  with both of his hands in a gesture of thankfulness for allowing one human being to connect and impart their own life lessons unto another.

I was hooked!

I first got the idea from my good friend, who mentioned of his own experience and the incredible encounter he had with doing the exact same thing, asking an elderly stranger, for some sage advice.

Which leads me to my next adventure. For the next 365 days I am going to ask a different person each day, What advice do you have for a young person to avoid making mistakes?

I am not entirely sure what will happen over the course of the next 365 days, lets wait and see. If anything it will be a great experience and discovery into the hearts and minds of those that have been on this planet far longer than I.
